Spring Reading

As Spring Break approaches, the cry arises: Help! What should I read?

If you’re looking to put together your kiddo’s Spring Reading List (or sneak in a few good reads yourself), I found a fabulous compilation from BookRiot – a new favorite blog.

BookRiot contributor Brandi Bailey has put together two fabulous lists that you should peruse immediately.

First, take a look at the Best Feminist Picture Books.

I love so many of these books, but particularly recommend Robert Munsch’s The Paper Bag Princess.

The_Paper_Bag_PrincessThis has been a staple in my classroom and personal library as long as I can remember. It’s one of those picture books that doesn’t limit itself to a specific age – any lover of fairy tales, unconventional heroes, or fun and funny twists will love this.

Then take a gander at the Best Feminist Books for Younger Readers.

“Younger readers” here is going all the way up into high school, so there’s something here for most every age. Again, so many fabulous options. My shout out goes to the ever wonderful Jasper Fforde’s The Last Dragonslayer.

Holy cow is this a good book. Again, you see my predilection for turned-about fairy tales – but the cleverness here is just beyond the beyond. If you’re familiar with Fforde’s work for adults, you know his way with words, puns, and literary references – none of his magic and style are missing here.

Take a stroll through and see what else strikes your fancy. Happy reading!

Author: Gina L. Grandi

Moderately well-read. Fairly socially awkward. According to Greg, 'a sentimental cynic with artistic sensibilities.' Somewhat nifty.
